First Okinawa Boat Dive: What to Book, Bring & Expect
π 2026-08-12
Okinawa is one of the easiest places in Japan to try clear-water boat diving. Most visitors base in Naha and day-trip to the Kerama Islands; Ishigaki is a separate hop for manta-focused trips.
Use the JPFun Scuba map to compare dive areas, then lock lodging near your departure pier.
Before you fly
- Confirm your C-card (OW or higher) and log book. Many boats ask for recent dives or a check dive.
- Book hotel + dive shop early for Golden Week, Obon, and consecutive holidays.
- If you get seasick, pack medication and eat light the morning of the boat.
- Rent gear your first days; buy only what you already know you like.
Kerama day-boat rhythm
- Meet early at the shop or Tomari port, then 30β60 minutes to the sites.
- Typical day: two dives, lunch on board, back mid-afternoon.
- Visibility and current change fast β trust the guideβs site call.
- Surface intervals are for water, shade, and not scrolling in the sun.
Shop questions worth asking
- English or Korean briefing available?
- Maximum group size per guide?
- Nitrox / computer rental?
- Bad-weather policy and refund window?
After the dive
- Easy dinner near Kokusai-dori; skip heavy drinking the same night if you dive again tomorrow.
- For a flat day, switch to the JPFun Surf map (Okinawa) or plan a rest day inland.
