Kanto Surf Weekend: Shonan or Chiba Without the Chaos
π 2026-08-12
Tokyo makes surfing easy to attempt and easy to botch. The fix is a single coast, a realistic swell check, and a plan B that is still fun.
Open JPFun Surf Β· Kanto, then choose Shonan (train-simple) or Chiba (often cleaner peaks, longer transit).
Day 0 β Friday night or early Saturday
- Check swell, wind, and tide the evening before β do not wake up undecided.
- Rent boards near the break if you are not traveling with gear.
- Stay one train stop off the absolute densest beach strip if you want sleep.
Day 1 β Surf the window
- Morning sessions usually beat afternoon sea breeze.
- Two short sessions beat one exhausted marathon if you are weekend-rusty.
- Midday: shade, water, and a simple lunch β save the big ramen hunt for after you rinse.
Day 2 β Peak or pivot
- Still firing: second morning, then return to Tokyo with buffer.
- Flat / blown out: switch to a city food day (okramen.net) or a short onsen escape inland (okonsen.net) instead of forcing mush.
- Optional dry-day add-on on a longer trip: a round via okcaddie.net β not required for a pure surf weekend.
Crowd & etiquette notes
- Summer weekends are busy; give space and follow local priority.
- Pin JPFun spots for parking / station context, then ask a local shop which peak is working that morning.
Route rule
Do not combine Shonan and Chiba in one weekend. Pick one, surf it well, and leave the other coast for next time.
